He Told Me That Was Loving Him

{Inspired by Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood"}
~
He told me that was loving him
The pupil of his eyes
I held within me as if a student
To teach me what I couldn't see
All of his frailties that had sustained him
And his weaknesses that made him powerful

He told me of the touch just right there
That seemed almost unfair
A touch that gave beat to a faint soul
Dying
But too afraid to let go

He told me that was loving him
The way the sun rose when the moon fell
Just after dawn and we became one
How beginning never ended
And finished was never done

He told me that was loving him
Though his mouth never uttered a word
He stood before me- stripped of his existence
Giving me nothing but everything
I can only tell him I that I love him

He told me that was loving him
Through the gentle and quiet calm
Dwelling within him
That rages in me
With the greatest tenderness
I cannot contain myself though I have tried
To hear a man speak of the way love makes him feel
